The Heart of Vatican
St. Peter's Basilica and its secrets
What awaits you
Vatican — is the smallest state in the world where spiritual power, history and art combine into a single coherent history. During the excursion, we will understand how the Vatican functions, what role the Pope plays and how the Roman Catholic Church was formed. St. Peter's Basilica — is the largest Catholic church in the world and the heart of Christianity. It is a space where art and faith reach their highest expression. We will visit the basilica itself, see the tomb of the Apostle Peter and go down to the Vatican Grottoes — the resting place of about 150 popes. We will look at the chapels with images of Princess Olga and St. Volodymyr, where the Ukrainian coat of arms is present. We will get acquainted with the masterpieces of Michelangelo and Bernini — from «Pieta» to a majestic canopy, and talk about the symbolism and hidden meanings of these works. We will find out how the election of the Pope takes place, we will hear stories about the most famous and controversial pontiffs — from the legendary Pope John to Alexander VI Borgia. We will also see the Hospital of the Holy Spirit in Sassia — one of the oldest medical institutions in Europe, and we will remember how Leonardo da Vinci studied anatomy here. If you wish, we can climb the dome of St. Peter's Basilica — from there you can enjoy an incredible view of Rome. For this, you need to purchase an additional ticket.
